An enrollee must pay their monthly premium when they enroll in a plan in order to activate their coverage, and they must continue making monthly premium payments to stay enrolled in coverage. In some cases, there is a grace period that allows people to catch up on missed premiums without losing their coverage. People with past-due premiums may be prevented from enrolling in coverage for the following year.
